Blockchain cybercrimes trigger action from China’s national prosecutor

The Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) of China is intensifying its efforts against cybercrimes linked to blockchain and the metaverse, highlighting a significant uptick in online frauds and other digital offenses. This move comes in response to the growing use of cryptocurrencies in money laundering and other illegal activities, making it challenging to track illicit transactions. Deputy prosecutor-general, Ge Xiaoyan, revealed a 64% increase in telecom fraud charges and noted the expansion of traditional crimes into the digital realm, including gambling and pyramid schemes. The SPP has taken action against 280,000 individuals related to cybercrimes, marking a 36% rise from the previous year. Zhang Xiaojin of the SPP cautioned against investment scams within the local crypto economy, emphasizing the emergence of new cybercrimes through the metaverse and blockchain platforms. Contrasting with mainland China's stringent measures, Hong Kong adopts crypto-friendly regulations to foster a standardized digital asset ecosystem without hampering innovation. The People's Bank of China (PBoC) also underscores the necessity for global regulatory efforts in its financial stability report, following its 2021 crackdown on crypto activities and mining.
