FTX settles dispute, sells European arm for $33M

FTX, the bankrupt crypto exchange, has resolved a contentious dispute over its European division by selling FTX Europe back to its original founders, Patrick Gruhn and Robin Matzke, for $32.7 million. This move comes after FTX had acquired the Swiss startup Digital Assets AG (later FTX Europe) for a hefty $323 million in 2021, suggesting current challenges in finding alternative buyers. The decision to sell was preceded by FTX's efforts to recoup the acquisition costs, leading to a lawsuit that accused the founders of financing the purchase with customer funds and massively overpaying. The founders refuted these claims and countered with a demand for $256.6 million from FTX. The settlement, reached on Feb. 21, marks the end of this legal tangle. FTX Europe, which was operational for only eight months, was part of FTX's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in the U.S. Despite its brief tenure, several crypto exchanges, including Coinbase, Trek Labs, and Crypto.com, showed interest in acquiring it to expand their regional market presence. FTX is nearing the completion of its bankruptcy proceedings, aiming to repay billions to creditors, with recent approvals to sell over $1 billion in shares of AI company Anthropic as part of its recovery efforts.
