Vanguard names Bitcoin-friendly former BlackRock exec as new CEO

Vanguard, a leading asset management firm, has appointed Salim Ramji, a former BlackRock executive known for his Bitcoin-friendly stance, as its new CEO. Ramji, who played a significant role in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF filing, officially starts his role at Vanguard on July 8, replacing the long-time Bitcoin critic Tim Buckley.

Ramji's appointment has sparked speculation about potential shifts in Vanguard’s position on Bitcoin. Industry experts, including Bloomberg ETF analysts James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas, doubt that Vanguard will launch its own spot Bitcoin ETF under Ramji. However, they suggest that Ramji might change Vanguard's policy against allowing clients to purchase spot Bitcoin ETFs on its brokerage platform.

Ramji left BlackRock in January, shortly after helping to launch its iShares Bitcoin Trust, seeking new leadership opportunities. As BlackRock’s Global Head of iShares and Index Investments, he was a member of the firm’s Global Executive Committee.

Vanguard has faced backlash from some long-time customers over its refusal to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs, a stance that contrasts with its traditional focus on equities, bonds, and cash. Ramji’s history with Bitcoin and blockchain technology raises the possibility of future policy changes at Vanguard.
