Crypto traders use P2P, even as NBC reiterates its anti-crypto stance
Despite the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) reinforcing its ban on cryptocurrency transactions through banks and micro-finance institutions, Cambodian crypto traders continue to invest through peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions. This resistance comes even as the NBC issued warnings about the potential use of cryptocurrencies for illicit activities. Contrary to the NBC's stance, the Securities and Exchange Regulator of Cambodia (SERC) licensed the Royal Group Exchange (RGX) for cryptocurrency trading, signaling a mixed regulatory environment. P2P crypto exchanges, which operate without intermediaries, have become a popular alternative for traders in Cambodia, offering advantages like lower transaction costs and more privacy. Binance is one of the largest P2P platforms in the country, despite lacking a SERC license. This trend towards P2P trading reflects a global shift towards decentralized financial exchanges, even in regulated markets. The majority of crypto activity in Cambodia remains unregulated, with RGX being the only licensed exchange. This scenario underscores the challenges and complexities of regulating the crypto market, highlighting the need for clear and consistent regulatory frameworks to prevent exploitation and protect investors.
