More than one million new tokens have been launched since April

Since April 1, over one million new tokens have been launched, with nearly half being memecoins created on the Solana network. Specifically, 372,642 new tokens appeared on Ethereum, with 88% (327,553) launched on Coinbase’s layer-2 blockchain, Base. This spike is attributed to the low-cost network attracting developers eager to create new memecoins.

The total value locked (TVL) on Base has surged by 630% since the start of the year, driven by the memecoin craze. In comparison, Solana saw the creation of 643,227 new tokens, with 466,914 identified as memecoins according to Step Finance data.

CoinMarketCap has listed the latest 500 new tokens, mostly memecoins, in the last 30 days. CoinGecko now features a memecoin category, showcasing over 600 coins with a combined market capitalization of $52.7 billion, nearly half of Tether's market cap.

Coinbase director Conor Grogan highlighted that the number of tokens launched on Ethereum in the past month is double the total created between 2015 and 2023. His post, however, drew criticism from the crypto community, with many pointing out the negative impacts of memecoins, such as scams and rug pulls. Despite the controversy, memecoins were the most profitable crypto trend in Q1 2024.
