Franklin Templeton joins the spot Ethereum ETF race

Franklin Templeton, a global asset management firm with $1.5 trillion under management, has entered the competition to launch a spot Ethereum ETF in the U.S., filing an S-1 with the SEC on February 12. Named "Franklin Ethereum ETF," it aims for listing on the Chicago Board Options Exchange. Uniquely, Franklin plans to stake a portion of the ETF's Ether holdings to generate additional income, a strategy similar to ARK 21Shares. Staking would be done through trusted providers, potentially including Franklin affiliates, with rewards treated as income. This move places Franklin among other significant applicants for spot Ether ETFs, including BlackRock, VanEck, Fidelity, and Grayscale. The SEC's decision timeline for these applications stretches from May to August, with a collective decision anticipated by May 23, mirroring the approach for spot Bitcoin ETFs. Despite joining late, Franklin's engagement underscores its interest in blockchain fundamentals, hinting at future expansions beyond Bitcoin.
