BlackRock Bitcoin ETF now holds more BTC than MicroStrategy

BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, has surpassed MicroStrategy in terms of Bitcoin holdings, now possessing nearly 198,000 BTC valued at over $13.5 billion. This development comes about 40 trading days following the SEC’s approval of nine new funds, underscoring the growing institutional interest in cryptocurrency. BlackRock's acquisition marks a significant milestone, especially as institutional demand drives Bitcoin prices, which recently crossed the $70,000 mark. The scarcity of Bitcoin in over-the-counter (OTC) trading platforms has led to increased reliance on public exchanges for large-volume trades, typical of institutional investors.

MicroStrategy, while not an ETF issuer, has aggressively incorporated Bitcoin into its corporate treasury, holding approximately 193,000 BTC. The company's strategy involves a leveraged operating model to finance operations and investments in Bitcoin. Despite the volatility, MicroStrategy's stock has seen a dramatic increase, rising 642% over the past year, significantly outperforming Bitcoin's gains. CEO Michael Saylor remains committed to investing in Bitcoin, citing its technical superiority over traditional assets like gold, the S&P 500, and real estate.
