Bitcoin ETF Buyers Sit on Losses as Crypto Conviction Fades

Bitcoin’s recent decline is being driven by weak demand from a key group of investors: buyers who entered through US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. Data from Glassnode shows these investors paid an average of about $84,100 per coin. With Bitcoin now trading near $78,500, many are sitting on losses of roughly 8% to 9%, making them less willing to add new money.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency has fallen more than 35% from its 2025 peak, briefly dipping below $77,000 in thin weekend trading. Analysts point to fading ETF inflows, lower market liquidity and a broader loss of interest, as Bitcoin has failed to react to usual supports such as a weaker dollar or geopolitical tensions.

While spot Bitcoin ETFs saw strong inflows in early January, that momentum has slowed, with several funds recording steady outflows in recent weeks. Both retail and institutional investors appear to be waiting for clearer signals on economic conditions and price stability before increasing exposure.

The slowdown marks a sharp contrast with the enthusiasm that followed the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in early 2024. Although the funds still hold about $107 billion in assets, analysts warn that without a fresh catalyst, weak sentiment could continue to weigh on prices.
