Crypto Isn’t Losing to AI, Says Dragonfly — It’s Just “Capitalism Doing Its Job”

San Francisco, CA – As AI dominates headlines and venture capital, some have questioned whether crypto has missed its “ChatGPT moment.” Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at crypto venture firm Dragonfly, rejects that idea.

“Less than 1% of AI users are paying,” Qureshi told CoinDesk at NEARCON 2026. “Crypto doesn’t have a free tier. There is no free Bitcoin. There’s no free Ethereum.” He emphasized that comparisons between AI’s explosive adoption and crypto misunderstand the nature of the products: crypto’s adoption is measured by ownership, not casual usage. Roughly 15% of Americans own crypto, compared with 80% who have tried some AI tool.

Qureshi points to stablecoins as evidence of crypto’s ongoing utility, noting that supply has grown 50% year-over-year. Even after multiple market drawdowns, crypto remains a $2 trillion asset class. Unlike AI giants like OpenAI, crypto projects often scale with small, highly leveraged teams, allowing global impact with fewer people.

The recent market contraction, Qureshi says, is a natural correction after overfunding. “That’s capitalism doing its job,” he said. Dragonfly recently announced a $650 million fund, citing current market conditions as the ideal time to double down.

On the intersection of crypto and AI, Qureshi warned against expecting AI to revive crypto’s momentum in the near term. “Is AI going to save crypto? F*** no. AI agents using crypto are so far away — it’s going to take years.” He noted that crypto tends to attach itself to emerging tech trends, from chatbots to AI agents, but the industry’s core principles remain unchanged.

“Crypto hasn’t capitulated to Wall Street,” he said. “Bitcoin encompasses everybody’s usage of the same technology. Nobody’s usage impinges on anybody else’s.”

Qureshi attributes much of the current pessimism to short-term thinking and market cycles rather than fundamental decline. “This idea that because prices are down, nobody’s going to use stablecoins anymore? Absurd. Chill out. It’s not a catastrophe.”

For Qureshi, crypto is not losing to AI — it’s evolving through natural cycles, and its long-term utility remains intact.
