Thailand to Block Access to 'Unauthorized' Crypto Platforms
Thailand's authorities have announced a decision to block access to "unauthorized" cryptocurrency platforms to bolster efforts against online crime. This directive follows a meeting of the Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Committee, where it was decided that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would identify and submit details of these unauthorized platforms to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society for access restriction.
The SEC has given platform users some time to manage their accounts and withdraw their assets before the block is enforced. This precautionary measure reflects a concern for user impact and a careful approach to enforcing regulations. Additionally, the Thai SEC has referred to similar measures taken by India and the Philippines as precedents for this action.
While Thailand aims to tighten regulations to curb online fraud, it simultaneously supports the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The country has allowed institutional and high-net-worth individuals to invest in crypto ETFs and has permitted retail investments in digital tokens tied to real assets. However, it also mandates that custodians prepare contingency plans for potential issues, striking a balance between innovation and security in the digital economy.
