Tether (USDT), the world's largest stablecoin, recently joined Bitcoin and Ethereum in the exclusive $100 billion market cap club, marking a historic achievement. According to AMBCrypto's analysis of Glassnode data, USDT's market cap surged 22% above its 2021 bull market peak, indicating strong capital inflows and bullish market sentiment. Despite this growth, USDT's trading volumes have not matched their 2021 highs, with the peak $660 billion in May 2021 still out of reach. Additionally, USDT's dominance in the stablecoin market has waned, dropping from over 95% in 2020-21 to 71% in March 2024, as Binance-backed First Digital USD (FDUSD) gains traction. Launched in July last year and bolstered by Binance's zero-fee trading, FDUSD quickly became the second most-traded stablecoin, holding over 21% market share and ranking fourth in market cap. This shift suggests a more balanced stablecoin market, with USDT maintaining a significant but reduced dominance as new players like FDUSD emerge. The competition reflects the evolving landscape of the cryptocurrency market, with diverse options benefiting users and possibly leading to a healthier market ecosystem.
