Coinbase Shares Surge After It Crushes Wall Street Expectations
Gold ETFs have experienced significant outflows at the beginning of 2024, coinciding with the launch of ten new spot bitcoin ETFs on January 11, which have attracted considerable investor interest. The two largest gold ETFs, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and iShares Gold Trust (IAU), saw net outflows of $2.6 billion and $507 million, respectively, from January 11 to February 14. This contrasts sharply with the same period last year when these funds enjoyed positive inflows. In total, 11 out of 14 checked gold ETFs reported net outflows since the year's start. Meanwhile, the two biggest new spot bitcoin ETFs, BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC, have amassed nearly $10 billion in assets under management. The overall net inflows into the bitcoin ETFs, including existing funds like Grayscale's GBTC, amount to about $5 billion. Despite the significant movement of funds, experts like Bloomberg Intelligence's Eric Balchunas caution against interpreting this as a direct migration from gold to bitcoin. Both assets are traditionally viewed as hedges against inflation and governmental interference, but their recent performance diverges, with gold prices dropping over 2% and bitcoin surging 23% in 2024.
