Van Eck's New Venture: Launching a Stablecoin with a $12 Million Kickstart
Nick van Eck, son of investment guru Jan van Eck, is launching a new stablecoin named Agora digital dollar (AUSD) after raising $12 million. This new stablecoin, backed by the U.S. dollar, won't be available in the U.S. until there's clear legislation, focusing instead on international markets. Agora, co-founded with crypto experts Drake Evans and Joe McGrady, aims to provide a transparent and reliable digital dollar, backed by cash, U.S. Treasury bills, and repo agreements. The reserves will be managed by the $90 billion asset firm VanEck, under Jan van Eck's leadership.
The funding for this venture comes from several notable firms, including Dragonfly, which led the seed funding round, and contributions from Robot Ventures, Wintermute, Breed, and General Catalyst. Both Evans and McGrady bring significant crypto and financial management experience to the team.
Agora, which is incorporated in Delaware and based in the British Virgin Islands for its stablecoin issuance, will initially target markets outside the U.S., eyeing benefits for regions like Argentina and Southeast Asia. This move puts Agora in competition with leading stablecoins like Tether and Circle's USDC, in a market where even the sixth-largest stablecoins have caps over $500 million.
