Altcoins a ‘relatively huge’ risk as days of big returns are gone, say analysts
Crypto analysts suggest that the high-reward potential of altcoins is dwindling, with big returns becoming less likely due to weak market narratives. Markus Thielen, head of research at 10xResearch, indicated that while there are still tactical opportunities, the days of 100x returns might be over.
Thielen noted that despite expectations of an altcoin bull market, retail participation remains low, and few new projects attract non-crypto-native traders. He mentioned that past altcoin bull markets had unique characteristics that drew in substantial investment, but this cycle is marked by tighter capital, low total value locked, and a lack of venture capital investments. Current market narratives are shorter-lived and lack strong backing.
Michael van de Poppe, founder of MN trading consultancy, highlighted the significant risk in holding a portfolio primarily of altcoins, noting substantial losses in a short period. Despite this, he sold all his Bitcoin to invest in altcoins, accepting potential losses of 50-80%.
Crypto investor Fabio Andreatta expressed skepticism about a forthcoming altseason, arguing that most altcoins might never reach their all-time highs again. Bitcoin’s dominance has increased, reflecting a broader market shift away from altcoins, nearing a year-to-date high of 56.05%.
