Crypto Exchange KuCoin Violated Anti-Money Laundering Laws, U.S. Charges
U.S. federal prosecutors have charged the cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, along with its two founders, Chun Gan and Ke Tang, for violating anti-money laundering (AML) laws. The charges include operating in the U.S. without registering with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, lying to investors about U.S. operations, and failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. Although KuCoin began a Know Your Customer (KYC) program in 2023, it didn't apply to existing customers. This lack of AML and KYC measures led to KuCoin being used for laundering over $3.2 million from Tornado Cash, a sanctioned entity. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) also sued KuCoin for not registering as required for futures and swaps trading, and for lacking a KYC program. Authorities seek monetary penalties, trading bans, injunctions, and forfeiture. The news caused a 5% drop in KuCoin’s native token (KCS), while Bitcoin's price also saw a slight decline.
