Stablecoins could boost dollar as global reserve currency: Fed governor

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller highlighted the role of U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins in reinforcing the dollar's status as the global reserve currency at a central banking conference on February 15. He pointed out that stablecoins, which constitute about 99% of the stablecoin market's capitalization, are primarily pegged to the U.S. dollar. This trend, according to Waller, might counter the speculative notion that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin could dethrone the dollar in international finance. Particularly, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC), which make up 90% of the $139.5 billion total stablecoin market cap, are crucial in decentralized finance (DeFi) for providing a stable, liquid asset for trading without the volatility associated with other cryptocurrencies. Despite acknowledging the potential challenge that the rapid growth of crypto poses to the dollar's dominance, Waller remains confident in the dollar maintaining its reserve currency status. This confidence is bolstered by ongoing legislative efforts to regulate stablecoins, with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell expressing a desire for a significant federal oversight role over stablecoins to ensure financial stability.
