Hong Kong Bitcoin and Ether ETFs See $39M Outflows on Monday: Farside Investors

On Monday, Hong Kong-listed spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced significant outflows totaling nearly $40 million, according to data from Farside Investors. This marked a sharp increase compared to previous outflows, which typically hovered around $6 million. The heavy outflows followed Bitcoin's drop below $61,000 on Friday.

The outflows were particularly notable for the spot Bitcoin ETFs from issuers ChinaAMC, Harvest Global, Bosera, and Hashkey, which collectively saw $32.7 million in outflows. This event marked the first instance of all six crypto ETFs, including both Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), reporting negative flows since their launch on May 2. Harvest Global's spot Bitcoin fund had not previously seen outflows.

Spot Ether ETFs also experienced significant outflows, totaling $6.6 million, which is much higher than past figures. Over eight days of trading, investors withdrew approximately $13 million from the six ETFs, indicating a disappointing performance compared to the initial excitement surrounding U.S.-listed counterparts.

Despite some rumors suggesting that mainland Chinese investors had accessed these funds via Stock Connect, Hong Kong’s stock exchange confirmed that this was not true. The overall Hong Kong-based ETF market remains relatively small, with about $50 billion in assets, compared to the U.S. ETF market, which holds around $9 trillion.
