Hayes Warns Tether’s Risky Hedge

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, warned that Tether’s latest audit shows the stablecoin issuer is positioning itself for imminent Federal Reserve rate cuts, a move that could sharply reduce its interest income. To hedge against what Hayes calls a “falling price of money,” Tether has boosted its exposure to gold and Bitcoin, shifting away from traditional assets.  

Hayes cautioned that this strategy carries significant risk: a 30% decline in the gold–Bitcoin portfolio could erase Tether’s equity, raising theoretical concerns about USDT’s solvency. He predicted that large holders and exchanges will increasingly push for real-time transparency into Tether’s balance sheet to ensure confidence in the world’s largest stablecoin.
