Harvard Endowment Boosts IBIT, GLD Stakes in Rare ETF Move

Harvard University significantly increased its holdings of the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) in its latest 13F filing. As of September 30, the university reported owning 6,813,612 IBIT shares valued at roughly $443 million and 661,391 GLD shares worth about $235 million. These represent sharp increases of 257% and 99%, respectively, from the end of June, when Harvard held 1,906,000 IBIT shares and 333,000 GLD shares.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas highlighted that IBIT has become Harvard’s largest single holding in its Q3 filing and marks the university’s biggest position increase of the quarter. He noted that it is highly uncommon for major endowments such as Harvard or Yale to allocate heavily to ETFs, describing this move as a strong endorsement for the fund. Although the nearly $500 million IBIT position accounts for only about 1% of Harvard’s total endowment, it places the university among the top institutional holders, ranking 16th overall.
