SEC Issues Crypto Custody Guide

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has issued a new investor guide on crypto wallets and custody, highlighting key risks and best practices. The bulletin contrasts self-custody with third-party custody, urging investors to carefully evaluate whether custodians mix client funds or rehypothecate assets, which could expose them to additional financial risks.  

The SEC also underscores the vulnerabilities of different wallet types. Hot wallets, connected to the internet, are prone to hacking and cybersecurity threats, while cold wallets, though offline, carry risks of permanent loss if devices fail, are stolen, or private keys are compromised. The guidance aims to help investors make informed decisions about safeguarding their digital assets.
