Coinbase posts $1.2B net income in Q1, surpasses entire 2023 earnings

In the first quarter of 2024, Coinbase reported a significant financial rebound, posting $1.6 billion in total revenue and $1.2 billion in net income. The crypto exchange achieved a $1 billion adjusted EBITDA, surpassing its 2023 full-year figure of $977.5 million. A major factor in this performance was a $737 million pre-tax unrealized gain on crypto assets. Following a successful sale of 2030 convertible notes, Coinbase's capital stood at $7.1 billion by quarter-end.

Consumer transaction revenue reached $935 million, marking a 99% increase, while trading volume surged by 93% to $56 billion, outpacing the U.S. spot market growth of 91%. Institutional transactions also grew, with revenue hitting $85 million, a 133% rise quarter on quarter. The trading volume on Coinbase Prime, the platform for institutional clients, escalated to $256 billion. Additionally, revenue from custodial services jumped 64% to $32 million, driven by crypto asset prices and new Bitcoin ETFs. Coinbase now custodies assets valued at $171 billion, serving as custodian for eight of the 11 new BTC funds launched.
