Fred Thiel Warns of Mining Profit Pressures

Marathon Digital CEO Fred Thiel has cautioned that Bitcoin mining is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain as rising energy costs and intensifying competition erode profit margins. He noted that only miners with access to low-cost power or those diversifying into areas such as artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) are positioned to withstand the pressures reshaping the industry.  

Looking ahead, Thiel warned that the 2028 Bitcoin halving, which will reduce block rewards to about 1.5 BTC, could push many mining firms out of business unless transaction fees rise or Bitcoin’s price strengthens significantly. Without these offsets, he said, profitability will be limited to the most efficient operators, leaving the broader mining sector facing a challenging future.
