California’s 5% Billionaire Tax Contested

California has introduced a proposal for a 5% wealth tax on billionaires with net assets exceeding $1 billion, aiming to generate revenue for healthcare and state assistance programs. The measure would apply not only to realized income but also to unrealized gains, meaning billionaires could be required to sell stock or business holdings to cover the tax, either upfront or spread over five years.  

The plan has sparked strong opposition from crypto industry leaders, including Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley, Castle Island Ventures founding partner Nic Carter, and Kraken co-founder Jesse Powell. They warn the tax could drive entrepreneurs and capital out of California, while questioning whether the funds would be used efficiently.
