Lazarus Group moves $12M from HTX, HECO hacks to Tornado Cash
North Korea's Lazarus Group has been reported to resume laundering stolen cryptocurrency funds through Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer, despite U.S. sanctions. On-chain analytics firm Elliptic revealed that $12 million, stolen from crypto exchange HTX and its cross-chain bridge HECO in November, was transferred to Tornado Cash's wallets since March 13. The attack on HTX and HECO Chain resulted in losses of $30 million and $86.6 million, respectively. These funds, converted to Ethereum via decentralized exchanges, remained dormant until recently. Tornado Cash, designed as a decentralized privacy tool on the Ethereum blockchain, faced U.S. sanctions in August 2022 for facilitating over $1 billion in money laundering, including funds from the Lazarus Group. Despite sanctions, Tornado Cash remains operational, leveraging smart contracts and decentralized infrastructure, which makes it resistant to direct seizure or shutdown. Following the sanctioning and seizure of other mixers like Sindbad by Finnish authorities, Lazarus Group has reverted to using Tornado Cash for laundering operations.
