MicroStrategy Q1 net loss hits $53.1M but Bitcoin buying spree continues

MicroStrategy's Q1 Performance MicroStrategy, a major corporate holder of Bitcoin, experienced a net loss of $53.1 million in Q1 2024. This loss includes a significant digital asset impairment of $191.6 million, a substantial increase from the previous year. Despite the loss, the company's revenue reached $115.2 million, marking a 5.5% decrease from Q1 2023.

Accounting Standards and Bitcoin Investments The firm has not yet adopted the new fair value accounting standard, which would recognize the increased market value of Bitcoin, up by 65% this quarter. Currently, the carrying value of their Bitcoin holdings is listed at $5.07 million at $23,680 per Bitcoin, rather than $15.2 billion under the new standard.

Continued Bitcoin Acquisition In April, MicroStrategy bought an additional 122 Bitcoin for $7.8 million, increasing its total holdings to 214,400 Bitcoin, worth $13.5 billion. The company financed this through $1.5 billion raised from convertible notes, used to purchase 25,250 Bitcoin, marking its 14th consecutive quarter of Bitcoin accumulation.

Stock Performance Following these announcements, MicroStrategy’s stock price fell by 3.3% in after-hours trading, despite a 170% surge earlier in the quarter due to Bitcoin's price rally.
