$100 Million Cryptocurrency Scheme Uncovered in Myanmar – What’s Going On?
A fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme exceeding $100 million was uncovered in Myanmar, orchestrated by a single Chinese company. Chainalysis, in collaboration with the US-based International Justice Mission, traced Tether tokens, a major cryptocurrency, to payments linked to this scam, which operated out of KK Park compound in eastern Myanmar. The scheme involved "pig butchering" scams, where victims' families were coerced into paying ransoms for trafficked workers' release. Despite Tether's traceability, criminals continue leveraging it for illicit transactions, raising concerns about its use in cross-border crimes. The identity of the involved company is withheld to protect the victims, who provided insights into the crypto wallets receiving the illicit funds. KK Park is suspected to house numerous trafficked individuals forced into online scams, with its ownership and operational details remaining elusive. These revelations have increased scrutiny on Tether, urging it to intensify efforts against its token's misuse. Tether has responded by freezing assets linked to such scams and blacklisting involved crypto wallets, demonstrating its cooperation with global authorities to curb the illegal use of its currency.
