May 8: Bitcoin Falls Below $62,500; Solana and Dogecoin Plunge Over 4%
The cryptocurrency market experienced a notable downturn in Wednesday’s trading session, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin leading the decline. The global cryptocurrency market cap fell by 1.8% to around $2.3 trillion over the last 24 hours.
As of 12:25 p.m., Bitcoin was trading at $62,490, down 1.6%, while Ethereum fell by 1.7% to $3,017. Altcoins mirrored this decline: Solana dropped 4.8%, XRP 3%, Dogecoin 4.4%, Shiba Inu 3%, Avalanche 5.7%, and Internet Computer 3.5%.
CoinSwitch Markets Desk noted that Bitcoin's inability to surpass the $65,000 mark has brought sustained selling pressure, pushing prices down for the second consecutive day. The desk highlighted that the next support level for Bitcoin rests at $62,000, which, if breached, could lead to further drops to recent lows around $57,000.
Rajagopal Menon, Vice President at WazirX, emphasized concerns over persistent selling pressure that could push Bitcoin towards the critical $58,000 support zone. While this level has historically served as a strong floor for Bitcoin, a further decline remains possible.
Menon added that Bitcoin's long-term gains hinge on potential rate changes by the Federal Reserve. Although there's uncertainty about a potential 25 basis point rate cut, future rate decisions will significantly influence Bitcoin's long-term price outlook.
Currently, stablecoins account for $59.06 billion, or 91.69% of the total 24-hour cryptocurrency trading volume, according to CoinMarketCap.
