Why Global Investors Are Turning to Africa’s Crypto Scene

Over the past years, Africa has emerged to be one of the most lucrative destinations of cryptocurrency in the world. Investors in the world are now taking great interest in what is occurring in the African nations, previously they concentrated primarily on Europe, Asia or America. This is due to the fact that Africa is a young demographic, an up-and-coming tech culture, and the real demands that crypto can fulfill exist.

Financial inclusion is one of the largest matters that attract the attention of investors to Africa. There are still several Africans who lack access to conventional banks. Some rural areas do not even have a bank and it can be very stressful to open an account. Cryptocurrency provides individuals with an opportunity to transfer, accept, and store money using only a phone. It is the biggest opportunity to investors since millions of people are willing to enter the digital economy without necessarily passing through the old banking system.

This is because mobile phone and the internet is widely used in Africa. People even in where none of the banks exist have phones that are connected to the internet. Already, mobile money services such as M-Pesa in Kenya have demonstrated to the world that the Africans can be easily integrated into new digital financial systems. According to investors, considering the fact that mobile money could spread so rapidly, then cryptocurrency would also expand very rapidly across the continent.

I also learn that the young Africans are highly technologically savvy. They develop quickly, create applications, buy and sell, and even develop new blockchain applications. In Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, startups already use crypto to address such issues as cross-border payments and remittances. I take pride in the fact that I see young Africans developing solutions that attract the attention of large foreign companies to learn. Another factor that has made investors excited about the crypto scene in Africa is this creativity and energy.

Remittances are also an issue. A large number of Africans working in foreign countries remit money to their families. The money transfer services of the traditional type are quite expensive, and the money may take days to reach. This is made easier and cheaper by cryptocurrency. The investors are aware that this is a large market, and once the crypto companies are able to serve Africans in a better way, they will not only earn a lot of money, but also benefit families.

Naturally, this is not without struggles. The regulating of cryptocurrency is still not certain in governments of some African countries. There are some limitations or some unexpected regulations that at times limit young people and start ups to work as they wish. However, this is also perceived by the investors as an indication that the market is yet to reach its full potential. The market will be even larger once there are improved regulations.

Being a Nigerian male, I think the crypto market in Africa is just starting. I have witnessed that friends used to trade coins, store money in stablecoins and even use crypto to pay a service. This makes me realize that Africa is not merely catching-up, but it can even be ahead in certain aspects. This is also visible to the global investors and this is the reason why investors are scrambling to be part of the story.

To sum up, Africa is the continent of people, the energy and the real-life requirement of the digital financial possibilities. The continent is a natural place to introduce crypto innovation with millions of unbanked citizens, high adoption of mobile phones, young talent, and massive remittance flows. This is not lost to the global investors, and that is why they are cast their eyes and money on the future of crypto in Africa.
